In late 2017 a major iron ore miner approached FORACO about the possibility of drilling shallow angel drill holes to access previously untested potential ore deposits in steep and rugged terrain. After a number of scope revisions, a cross functional team including (Client) Geoscientists, Drill Crew, Operations, HSEC, Mechanical and Engineering support set about designing, risk assessing and planning the project.
FORACO’s radio remote controlled RC Rig 7 (with full Measurement While Drilling) was proposed as the platform to execute the works as the crew could operate the rig from a distance on reduced angles, whilst maintaining a clear line of site of all activities. A number of engineering changes were undertaken with the rig to ensure its stability and efficiency were not impacted with these challenging holes.
In total, over 1,000 meters were drilled from a single pad in extremely steep terrain in seven holes. The project was completed safely and efficiently without incident, and under budget. All holes reached planned depths (some being extended by a considerable margin) with minimal deviation and excellent sample recovery – testament to the team that designed the program and modifications to the rig, and the crew that drilled the holes.
